New Title Requirements for Vehicles in Maine
Maine Ends Practice of Issuing Titles for Vehicles 25 Years or Older
Antique Vehicles Exempt from New Regulations
Effective immediately, vehicles that are 25 model years and newer are required to have a title in the State of Maine. This new regulation brings Maine in line with most other states, which have similar title requirements.
The Secretary of State's office will continue to issue titles for vehicles that are 25 years or older upon the presentation of documented and notarized evidence of ownership and payment of a $40 fee. Antique vehicles are exempt from this new regulation and will continue to be registered using an Antique Auto Affidavit (MV-65).
The Secretary of State's office encourages all vehicle owners to contact their local Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) branch office for more information. A list of BMV branch office locations can be found on the Secretary of State's website.
