Chronic Inflammatory Diseases On The Rise

Chronic Inflammatory Diseases on the Rise

Industrialized nations face a growing epidemic

Preventable diseases require lifestyle changes

Throughout most of the 20th century, infectious diseases presented the greatest health threat to industrialized nations. In the past century, advances in sanitation, hygiene, access to clean water, and vaccinations have eliminated nearly all of those diseases. Today, the greatest disease threat to people in developed nations is chronic diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and inflammatory diseases.

Inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, and lupus, are caused by chronic inflammation in the body. While inflammation is a natural response to injury or infection, chronic inflammation can lead to tissue and organ damage, pain, and disability.

According to a study published earlier this year in JAMA Internal Medicine, inflammatory diseases now account for 30% of all deaths in the United States. Other estimates suggest that up to 5% of the world's population suffers from some form of inflammatory disease. This number is expected to rise in the future as the Western lifestyle continues to be adopted in more countries.

The exact cause of inflammatory diseases is unknown, but genetics and environmental factors appear to play a major role. Things we can do to reduce the risk of developing chronic inflammatory diseases include:

  • Eating a healthy diet, including plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Exercising regularly
  • Not smoking
  • Limiting alcohol intake
  • Getting enough sleep
  • If you have symptoms of an inflammatory disease, such as pain, fatigue, or digestive problems, see your doctor right away. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent serious complications.
